Environments
Classroom environments at The School for Young Children (SYC) provide a warm and welcoming feeling for everyone who enters. SYC is situated next to a five-acre nature preserve. Each week children explore the woods and trails, fostering a deep appreciation for nature by observing and engaging with their surroundings. Nature experiences often extend into the classroom, further enriching learning.

Outdoor Spaces
Outdoor play is an integral part of the SYC experience, supporting children’s healthy development. Each outdoor play space is used on a daily basis throughout the year.
Big Backyard Playground
The playground has equipment for climbing, digging, sliding and dramatic play opportunities. A small grassy hill allows for rolling in warmer months and sledding during the winter. A mud kitchen and water table provide sensory experiences and hands-on science exploration. Additionally, children enjoy riding bikes and scooters, further enhancing their physical development and coordination.
Hickory Hill Play Space
Hickory Hill has a variety of equipment that provide opportunities for children to explore climbing and balancing skills. The spot also offers other elements to encourage children’s dramatic play skills outside.
Taylor’s Field
A large field provides ample space for big movement activities, group games, and exploration. This open area allows children to engage in physical activities, fostering gross motor and social skills through cooperative play and discovery. More about Taylor’s Field.
The Nature Trail
The nature trail at The School for Young Children offers an opportunity for children to learn about life cycles within nature, observe the changing seasons, and develop physical skills like climbing and balancing. As they explore bug boards and other natural elements, they cultivate a deep respect and appreciation for the natural world.
